While Kentucky Derby Day at Churchill Downs in Louisville puts the Bluegrass State on the map each May, on a day-to-day basis the state might be best-known for its famed Kentucky Fried Chicken, which originated at Harlan Sanders’ service station in North Corbin in the 1940s. Yet Kentucky is known for a variety of additional claims — from bourbon distilleries to automobile manufacturing and from tobacco to bluegrass music. But in the winter the state goes mad for college basketball. Red and blue lines are drawn as natives find it difficult to trust anyone who claims to be a fan of both the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville. Wildcats and Cardinals don’t mix.
